Jaguar Type 01: A Brand Reborn in Electric Grand Touring

Picture the sun setting over the Mediterranean, a golden glow across the winding roads of the Côte d’Azur, warm air and the scent of salt and pine drifting through the open windows of a long, low grand tourer. It is the setting the Jaguar Type 01 seems designed for. The Type 01 is the most significant new model from the British marque in decades, and the first production car of an entirely new era for Jaguar as it transforms itself into an ultra-luxury electric manufacturer.

The Type 01 is not just another vehicle. It is a complete brand reset, a gamble that Jaguar is willing to lose most of its existing customers to attract an entirely new type of luxury buyer. The company has effectively paused much of its traditional lineup while preparing for this new generation of electric luxury vehicles. The stakes are enormous, and everything depends on whether buyers embrace this bold reinvention.

The Name: Type 01

Jaguar has confirmed that its forthcoming luxury four-door grand tourer will be called the Type 01. The naming strategy is intentionally symbolic, uniting the brand’s history of innovation in design, technology, and performance with its electric future. The “Type” designation is a throwback to previous Jaguar models, first featured on the C-Type Le Mans racer in 1951 and subsequently used on the legendary E-Type sports car. The “0” represents zero tailpipe emissions, thanks to a battery-electric powertrain. The “1” denotes its status as the first Jaguar of a new era, a one-of-a-kind vehicle that will set the tone for all future Jaguar models.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, explained the significance: “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a one of a kind.”

The Spirit of Jaguar: Engineering Inspired by the Past

To appreciate the dynamic essence of what makes a true Jaguar, the engineering team started the development journey by driving iconic models from the brand’s past. They spent time behind the wheel of great models including the XK120, E-Type, XJ Coupé V12, XJS, and XJ Series I. Each offered a visceral demonstration of the brand’s provenance and what would make the new luxury GT a true Jaguar.

The XK120, composed on the road, demonstrated that the new GT must provide a cosseting cabin that shrinks around the driver. The E-Type showed that you should never arrive unnoticed in a Jaguar. The XJS, designed to travel long distances at pace, left the engineers feeling refreshed and energized, a quality that translates into the new GT’s ability to carve through corners and cross continents in complete confidence. The XJ Series I epitomized characteristics central to the future of Jaguar: power in reserve with exceptional refinement.

Above all, the driving dynamics of the four-door GT were inspired most by the XJ Coupé with its blend of performance and comfort. The V12 always has power in reserve, while its chassis cossets like a luxury saloon. This duality defines the DNA inherent in the new Jaguar: an engaging drive with deep reserves of power, plus refinement and composure.

The Powertrain: Tri-Motor Electric Performance

The Type 01 is powered by a tri-motor electric powertrain, comprising three electric motors with two likely at the rear axle. The system delivers more than 1,000 metric horsepower (over 736 kW) and over 1,300 Nm of torque. This places it firmly into modern electric supercar territory despite its luxury GT positioning. The intelligent torque vectoring technology distributes power where and when it’s needed with embedded software that responds in as little as one millisecond.

The Type 01 rides on Jaguar’s dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) and uses an 850-volt electrical system capable of charging at speeds up to 350 kW. A massive 120 kWh battery pack is expected to deliver more than 400 miles of driving range (approximately 430 miles under WLTP testing), positioning it among the longer-range premium EVs in the segment.

The focus of the engineering team was not on 0 to 60 mph times, but on delivering a “wave of power” that builds progressively and never runs out. The car accelerates faster than many competitors in the 60 to 100 mph range, where that performance is most usable for overtaking and high-speed cruising. The majority of the power goes to the rear wheels, giving the car a rear-biased character despite its size.

The Chassis: Comfort and Control

The Type 01 features dynamic air suspension working alongside twin-valve active dampers to finesse ride comfort. The system is designed to ensure that composure is never compromised, even at high speeds. The car is stable and planted at speed, with the driver able to guide it with just a couple of fingers on the steering wheel.

The suspension, steering, and torque control systems have been carefully calibrated to deliver a distinctive Jaguar driving character. Unlike many modern performance cars that prioritize steering precision and sportiness, the Type 01 focuses on ride comfort and stability. The driver sits low, like a sports coupe, making the ride smooth, centered, and planted. The car’s weight and oversized dimensions are barely perceptible behind the wheel.

The Design: Controversial and Confident

The Type 01 follows the polarizing Type 00 concept that previewed Jaguar’s radical new design direction. The production car retains much of that dramatic shape, with a long hood and low roofline that provides a clear visual link to great models of the past while defying the EV design norm. The car measures approximately 5.2 meters long with a massive 3.2-meter wheelbase, giving it a cavernous cabin.

Perhaps the strangest design detail is the absence of a rear window, something Jaguar has confirmed will carry over to production. The company spent a long time debating this decision, ultimately concluding that the rear screen offered no benefits. The large panoramic roof is switchable for UV and heat management.

The Interior: Luxury and Technology

The Type 01’s interior has not been fully revealed, but early reports suggest a cabin designed for the driver with modern technology and premium materials. The car will be a statement piece, designed for people shopping at the upper echelon who prioritize design and interior quality over powertrain specifications. For these buyers, Jaguar believes the vehicle’s powertrain is “about 13th on the list” of priorities.

The production car will feature a striking, modernist design, with a long bonnet and low roofline. Standard equipment will include 23-inch wheels, with smaller 21-inch sets available for regions with rougher roads. Personalization options are expected to be extensive, reflecting the brand’s move into ultra-luxury territory.

The Monaco Evening

The camouflaged prototypes have completed their demonstration laps around the Monaco Circuit ahead of the Formula E race. The Type 01’s development was directly optimized using technology proven in motorsport by the championship-winning Jaguar TCS Racing team. The car’s electric motors and battery technology benefit from the lessons learned on the track.

The Type 01 is not a car for everyone. It represents a significant moment in Jaguar’s history, the first production model in an entirely new era for the brand. It will carry a price tag starting well above $100,000, positioning it as a rival to Bentley and Rolls-Royce. It is a complete brand reset, and the company is willing to lose most of its existing customers to attract an entirely new type of luxury buyer.

The Future: A Bold Reinvention

The Type 01 is expected to officially debut later this year, with first customer deliveries planned for the first half of 2027. It will likely not remain alone for long, as Jaguar is already planning additional models based on the same architecture, including a luxury sedan and a high-end SUV.

For now, though, everything depends on whether buyers embrace the Type 01 itself. The car’s styling has been dividing opinions, and the lack of a rear window will only add to the controversy. But Jaguar appears comfortable with the polarizing reaction, intentionally distancing itself from its previous identity in an attempt to attract a new type of customer.

The Type 01 is the embodiment of Jaguar’s future design and engineering philosophy, combining modernist styling, advanced technology, and driver-focused dynamics. It is a statement of intent, a declaration that Jaguar is no longer content to compete in the premium market against BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It is aiming higher, and it is betting everything on this one car.
